Wolverines Host Idaho State with Home Win Streak on the Line

Clark Clifford - UVU Athletics

OREM — 18 games and counting. Tied for the fourth longest home winning streak in the nation. Returning from a successful three-game road trip that included two wins over Big Sky Conference opponents. A chance to improve to 9-4 overall.

Yes, these are all things the Utah Valley University Wolverines have going for themselves coming into Wednesday night when they host the Idaho State Bengals.

After two weeks away from Orem, the Wolverines finally return to their home floor where they haven’t lost since Nov. 29, 2017. UVU has won seven out of its last eight including its first-ever win over Weber State at the Dee Events Center on Saturday.

Jake Toolson is coming off a 19-point, 12-rebound performance against the Wildcats. Toolson leads UVU in scoring at 15.5 points per game while Conner Toolson is averaging 14.6 points.

Through 12 games, UVU is ranked in the top-50 of four statistical categories. UVU ranks 25th in 3-point field goal percentage at 39.4 percent. The Wolverines rank 29th in defensive rebounds per game (29.33) and total rebounds (457). UVU is 35th in 3-point field goals made as the Wolverines have hit 106 3-pointers on the season. Junior center Baylee Steele is ranked 33rd in total rebounds with 99.

Idaho State is off to a 4-3 start, the best start since the 2005-06 team started 6-1. The Bengals are coming off a 68-66 win at Santa Clara on Dec. 7 in which Kelvin Jones scored a team-high 20 points in just 23 minutes of floor time. This might seem like an odd stat but Idaho State is 2-0 when shooting less than 40 percent from the floor. Idaho State also features a former UVU player in guard Jared Stutzman. The senior from Idaho Falls is averaging 8.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 31 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

Last Meeting vs. Idaho State

The last time UVU and Idaho State met was the first game back from the Toughest 24 Hours in college basketball on Nov. 14, 2017 in Pocatello. Jake Toolson had a career night with 27 points, five rebounds and four assists in an 84-71 win over the Bengals. Akolda Manyang chipped in 19 points and seven boards as the Wolverines picked up their first win of the season.

Home Winning Streak Alive and Well

UVU is currently 4-0 at home in the 2018-19 season. Yes, two of those wins came against non-Division I opponents. However, the average margin of victory is 19.75 and includes a win in the WAC/Summit League Challenge over Denver. 18 straight home wins sets the new program-record which was 17, set during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.

During the streak, UVU also has wins over GCU, New Mexico State and Seattle. The Wolverines can push the streak to 20 with wins over Idaho State and Sam Houston State this week. The big test will come Jan. 12 when UVU hosts Seattle in the WAC home opener for the Wolverines. But for now, UVU looks to keep that winning streak alive on Wednesday night when they host their I-15 rival in Idaho State.

The Wolverines lead the all-time series over the Bengals, 6-4, and have won five straight. Idaho State’s last win in the series came Dec. 19, 2006 in Pocatello. The Bengals knocked off the Wolverines 76-62.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT and can be heard on ESPN 960 AM. You can also stream the game on the WAC Digital Network, KSLtv app, Facebook Live or the GoUVU YouTube channel.
