Home Winning Streak Alive and Well for UVU Men’s Hoops

UVU Athletics

18 games. Yes, that’s right, 18 games. That is the magic number of the home winning streak that the UVU men’s basketball team is currently on. It’s the fifth longest streak in the nation and began one year ago on Dec. 2, 2017 when the Wolverines beat UTSA, 88-80, in the UCCU Center. Since then, UVU has taken care of business on its home floor. Wins over Weber State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside, Denver, and North Dakota highlight some of the non-conference wins. Not even GCU or New Mexico State could come in and knock off the Wolverines on their home floor.

Following a complete dismantling of Denver on Saturday night in the WAC/Summit League Challenge, UVU won’t have another home contest until Dec. 19 when Idaho State comes to town.

Against the Pioneers on Saturday night, UVU shot 53 percent from the field. The Wolverines were also 13-of-29 from beyond the 3-point line. The Wolverines also had 19 second-chance points compared to just four for Denver. Five Wolverines scored in double figures led by Conner Toolson with 26 points. TJ Washington had a career-high 17 points while Jake Toolson finished with 15, Ben Nakwaasah finished with 14 and Baylee Steele had 10.

“I’m really excited about the 18 in a row at home but really what I’m most excited about is that our team is just growing,” said Utah Valley head coach Mark Pope. “We’re never going to grow straight ahead all the time, but we are taking steps where we’re just getting a little better here and a little better there and guys are starting to believe a little bit more in each other and what we’re trying to do, and what really makes us win and that part is really fun so I’m happy for our guys.”

If you need confirmation that Pope is excited about this home winning streak, just see the tweet below.

Not only is the home winning streak intact, UVU ran its current winning streak to five games. After starting the season 1-3 with losses at BYU, at Saint Mary’s and at Utah State, UVU has gone on a tear. Some might say the schedule was filled with cupcakes and to an extent, they might be right. But wins over Hartford and Long Beach State in the MGM Resorts Main Event in Las Vegas followed by three straight home wins is what a young team needed.

For a team that had three returners from the 2017-18 team that won a program-best 23 games, what UVU is doing in 2018-19 is nothing short of impressive. The road gets a little more difficult for the Wolverines. UVU travels to Tucson to take on Arizona on Thursday and Northern Arizona in Flagstaff on Saturday. Following the Northern Arizona contest, UVU has a week to get ready to take on Weber State in Ogden. UVU closes out its non-conference home slate when it hosts Idaho State on Dec. 19 and Sam Houston State on Dec. 22. And there is no reason to think the Wolverines can’t push their home winning streak to 20 before WAC play begins.

In fact, if all goes according to Kenpom, UVU would finish its regular season with a 28-game home winning streak. Something is happening inside the UCCU Center and it’s high time to get in on the party.
