UVU Women’s Golf Performs Well at Fall Classic

The UVU women’s golf team fared well it is season-opening tournament at Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville. Led by juniors Ana Raga and Carly Dehlin, the Wolverines came away with a third-place finish out of 12 teams. UVU shot a 28-over-par 880 in the two-day event.

“What a start to the season. I am absolutely thrilled with how everyone performed,” said head UVU coach Dr. Sue Nyhus. “The girls were truly attacking the golf course and putting pressure on the course. It wasn’t just one or two individuals, it was the whole team.”

The Wolverines set the 54-hold program record and the 18-hole school record on Tuesday afternoon. UVU posted a 4-over-par 288 in the final round of the Hobble Creek Fall Classic and was the best team score of the day. 

“Our freshmen showed a lot of grit. All three of them had great outings,” added Nyhus. “We also had some great performances from our upperclassmen, and I’m very pleased with how everyone performed. They really tore up the course today by posting the lowest round of the day.”

Raga, who hales from Caracas, Venezuela, was the highest finisher for the Wolverines. She finished with a 1-over-par 214, which is a 54-hole individual school record at UVU. Raga shot a career-best 1-under-par 70 in the final round and led the tournament field with 43 pars.

Dehlin, from Draper, placed seventh overall with a 3-over-par 216. She shot an even-par 71 in the final round after shooting a career-best-2-under 69 in the second round on Monday. Dehlin led her teammates at the event with 11 birdies.

Two other Wolverines finished inside the top-30. Sophomore Kaylee Shimizu finished 24th while freshman Keila Baladad finished 29th. It was the first collegiate tourney for Baladad, who shot a 16-over-par 229. Shimizu shot a 13-over-par 226. 

In all, UVU finished 14 shots back of champion New Mexico State and 11 shots back of second-place Oral Roberts. However, the Wolverines finished ahead of WAC foes Grand Canyon, UTRGV and CSU Bakersfield as well as in-state foes Southern Utah and Weber State. 

Up next for the UVU women’s golf team is a trip to the Mark Allen ORU Shootout at Meadowbrook Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma on September 25-26.
