OREM — Slow starts in conference play have been a trend for the UVU men’s basketball team. However, on Thursday night in the UCCU Center, that wasn’t an issue. The Wolverines used a 24-2 run midway through the first half to pull away from UTRGV en route to an 82-61 win.

With the win, UVU has now won 22 straight home games dating back to Nov. 29, 2017. The last time UVU lost a home game was that fateful November evening to crosstown foe BYU.

UVU shot 56 percent on the night and hit 10 3-pointers. As part of the first half run, Jake Toolson had 10 of his game-high 19 points. Conner Toolson finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Midway through the second half, Conner Toolson went down with what looked like an injury to his right side. Minutes later, Conner Toolson took a TJ Washington pass and hit a corner three. That was just the kind of night it was for the Wolverines.

Without big man Connor MacDougall, who is out at least six weeks, UVU had no problem breaking the UTRGV press. The speed of guard Ben Nakwaasah and TJ Washington led to easy buckets for the Wolverines. UVU had a 23-5 scoring advantage in fastbreak points on the night.

And, WAC Player of the Week Richard Harward played well for UVU. Harward recorded a career-high five blocks to go along with seven points and eight rebounds. Washington and Baylee Steele both finished in double figures for UVU with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Terry Winn led the Vaqueros with 15 points. Leslie Varnier Jr. and Johnny Cmogorac finished with 10 points apiece for UTRGV.

The 22-game home winning streak is second in the nation behind Houston. The Cougars have won 29 straight home games. UVU improves to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in WAC play. UTRGV falls to 9-11 and 1-3 in WAC play.

UVU hosts New Mexico State on Saturday in the UCCU Center. Tip-off is schedule for 7 p.m. MT.
