ST. GEORGE — The speculation is over. Dixie State is set to become the newest member of the Western Athletic Conference beginning in the 2020-21 school year.

On Friday afternoon, Dixie State announced it is making the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks. The Trailblazers has to complete the reclassification process from Division II to Division I. Once that is complete, Dixie State will be a full-fledged member of the WAC.

“Several factors make Dixie State University a great fit for the WAC,” Commissioner Jeff Hurd said. “Commitment to quality academics and athletics programs, along with the long-term vision that President Williams has for the University’s growth, are at the top of the list. I have no doubt that Dixie State will make a smooth transition to Division I and to the WAC.”

In its lone season in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Dixie State has won just one conference championship. However, prior to that, Dixie State won 20 PacWest Championships in 11 seasons. They were also four-time PacWest Community Engagement award winners.

The Trailblazers won’t be eligible for postseason play for at least four years in specific sports. This is a rule that NCAA has in place when a school makes the jump to Division I.

Here is what will happen in regard to Dixie State and postseason competition.

Dixie State will not be eligible for WAC postseason competition in any sport in which the winner is the league’s automatic qualifier for an NCAA championship (baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball). Dixie State will be eligible for cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field conference championships beginning in 2020-21. Dixie State may participate individually in the WAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships beginning in 2021, but only as unattached entries. In the sport of golf, Dixie State will not be eligible for the league’s automatic team or individual qualifier to the NCAA Division I Men’s or Women’s Championship. In addition, Dixie State will be immediately eligible to win regular-season titles in all sports sponsored by the WAC.

This came through in the press release from the WAC.

It is a good addition. With Cal State Bakersfield taking off following the 2018-19 school year, the WAC needed another stable institution. Dixie State plans to upgrade some of its facilities, most notably its softball stadium, thanks to donors.

The location is ideal as it is a true Western school. And its facilities fit right in with other institutions in the WAC.
