Bakersfield Escapes, NMSU and GCU Win in Blowout Fashion

Thursday nights in the WAC have given us some dramatic finishes and entertaining ball games. And if you didn’t stay up late, like me, you missed another dramatic finish. Jarkell Joiner got fouled on a 3-point attempt with .4 seconds remaining, hit all three free throws and gave CSU Bakersfield a 74-73 win over UMKC. Here is the video.

Remember what happened two weeks ago in Bakersfield? Yes, the ‘Runners won in dramatic fashion over UVU in a weird sequence. Maybe there is something weird going on inside the Icardo Center late in ball games. But CSU Bakersfield is now 4-1 in WAC play while UMKC falls to 2-1 in conference.

NMSU Opens Up a Can on Seattle

Whatever head coach Chris Jans said to his guys in practice this week leading up to their trip to Seattle, it worked. New Mexico State came out blazing and never looked back in a dominating 87-60 win over injury-depleted Seattle. Eli Chuha had a team-high 13 points while Terrell Brown and JoJo Zamora each finished with 12 points. This game was actually over at halftime when NMSU led 50-24. The Aggies shot 62 percent in the first half compared to just 31 percent for the Redhawks. NMSU has now won three straight WAC games after losing their conference opener at California Baptist.

GCU Dominates Chicago State

This should come as no surprise to anyone. GCU led from start to finish in an 80-46 win over Chicago State on Thursday night. Five ‘Lopes scored in double figures led by Carlos Johnson’s 12 points. GCU shot 51 percent from the field and hit seven 3-pointers in the mix. The ‘Lopes improve to 4-1 in WAC play while Chicago State remains winless in the WAC.

Women’s Hoops Provide the Drama

Within minutes of each other, the UVU women’s basketball team and the Chicago State women’s basketball team provided plenty of drama. Jordan Holland hit a running layup as time expired to help UVU beat UTRGV. Chicago State’s Alexandria Cliff followed that up with a jumper of her own as time expired to give the Lady Cougars a 50-48 win over GCU.

It was another fun night in WAC hoops, both for the men and the women. This conference never has a dull moment.
